The National institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has entered into its adulthood and completed two decades of its existence in the field of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) in the school education sector. This journey of the Institute has been quite successful. With about 2.71 million students on its roll, NIOS is credited to be the largest open school in the world with significant popularity in the Commonwealth countries and in certain other developing and developed countries. NIOS has been offering Secondary and Senior Secondary and Vocational Education & training (VET) courses through its study centers and Open Basic Education Programme through Accredited Agencies.
19th Regional Centre of National Institute of Open Schooling was inaugurated in Raipur Chhattisgarh on 04.02.2013, Regional Centre has several study centers in the area of academic, and vocational education covering all the districts of Chhattisgarh .Major functions of the Regional Center include promotion of open Schooling, admissions, studentsí support, examinations.
Admissions are offered in Basic Education, Secondary and Senior Secondary, and vocational education programmes. Courses are offered at the doorsteps of the learners using open and distance education mode. There are a number of flexibilities designed into the system to help the learners, on demand examination, 24◊7 online admission, transfer of credit, credit accumulation, change of subject, additional subject, etc.
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November,1989 as an autonomous organisation in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. NIOS is providing a number of Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level. It also offers Elementary level Courses through its Open Basic Education Programmes (OBE).Government of India through a gazette notification vested NIOS with the authority to examine and certify learners registered with it upto pre degree level courses whether Academic, Technical or Vocational. Association of Indian Universities, vide letter No . EV/11(354)/91/ 25 July, 1991 issued Equivalence of Senior Secondary Certificate Examination of NIOS.
